About

A quiet corner for the slow arts

Lotus & Stone is an independent magazine about the culture of the slow East — tea and its rituals, the contemplative garden, brush and ink, and the long habit of stillness.

We write about the aesthetics of calm: objects worth keeping, spaces worth making quiet, and ideas that reward an unhurried afternoon.

Our subjects are drawn from across Japan, China and Korea, and we try to treat them with the plainness and respect they deserve — no caricature, no mystical shorthand. A raked gravel garden, a well-made pot, a thread of incense: these are cultural things, and this is a culture-and-lifestyle publication, nothing more solemn than that.

What this is

A general-interest guide, for anyone drawn to the way of tea, the quiet of a garden, or the pleasure of a considered home. You’ll find field guides, short essays, and calm ritual modules — like The Way of Tea, Simply — meant to be read slowly and returned to.

What this isn’t

This is not a practitioners’ body, and it is not a source of medical or therapeutic advice. When we write about movement or meditation, we do so as living culture — a way of paying attention — never as treatment, cure, or health claim. Nothing here is affiliated with any association or professional organisation.

How we handle imagery

Our photographs are of objects and spaces — tea sets, stone, moss, bamboo, ceramics, brush and ink, a spare tatami room. You won’t find identifiable people or medical imagery here; the quiet is the subject.
