A Brief History of Acupuncture for Detoxification in the United States: While acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, the specific treatment of addiction with acupuncture only dates back to the early 1970s. The work of Dr. Wen led to the discovery of what ultimately would become a hybrid of acupuncture. Dr. Wen, a neurosurgeon in Hong Kong, was researching the effects of acupuncture for postsurgical pain and coincidentally found that applying electrical stimulation to the lung point in the ear relieved opiate withdrawal symptoms…more

Acupuncture in the Treatment of Substance Abuse: Everyone claims addiction is a major problem in this country. The jails are crowded with addicts. Addiction, either directly or indirectly, costs untold millions (and possibly billions) of dollars in every area of life: poor health; lost productivity; crime; accidents; and so on. Current treatment is helpful but extremely limited. It works fairly well in the short term but is abysmally ineffective in maintaining recovery over time…more

Understanding Addiction: (Part I of III): Addiction is a complex and baffling condition. It is rampant in our society in every form, from drug dependency and alcoholism to eating disorders; gambling; compulsive shopping; spending; smoking; and (in some instances) sex, to name a few. The abuse of prescription drugs has increased rapidly in recent years. Vicodin is one of the most widely abused prescription narcotics today, followed by OxyContin. Both drugs are opiates and are responsible for helping fill beds in treatment facilities nationwide…more

Understanding Addiction – Treatment Facilities and the use of Acupuncture (Part II of III): The clients sit on the floor of the light-filled, circular meditation room. The deep plush purple carpet stands in direct contrast to the glimpses of blue sky that filter through the 12 skylights that surround the high ceilings. The number 12 is an intentional part of the architectural plan CEO Jack Bernstein had in mind. With all of the ear needles in place in every client, and soothing sounds emanating from a CD, the group meditates for 45 minutes. This practice takes place three times a week at the Pfleger Center, a 120-bed, state-of-the-art treatment center for addiction…more

Understanding Addiction – Stories from the Front Lines (Part III of III): While treating a group at a recovery home, I met the wife of an actor named "Noreen," who was in treatment to deal with her alcoholism. The next week, I turned on the news and heard that Noreen had been found dead in her swimming pool. She died from an overdose of drugs and alcohol. Because her husband was a well-known actor, the story was all over the news and in the tabloids. Her husband, understanding the power of the disease that is addiction, relapse and the need for quality treatment, raised a million dollars and purchased a new building for the recovery home, which often had a waiting list…more

The Use of Acupuncture in Addiction and Obesity: A large number of Western acupuncturists are using a variety of acupuncture techniques to treat obesity, smoking and hard drug addiction. There is some excellent physiological and clinical evidence to support the use of acupuncture in these areas.
